The New York Society for Ethical Culture "Champions of Change" Public Service Award series is named and acknowledges the lifetime achievements of Dr. Phyllis Harrison-Ross. An acclaimed psychiatrist and pediatrician, she served under New York Governor Mario Cuomo until she unexpectedly passed away on January 16, 2017.

Dr. Ross was the commissioner for the New York State Commission of Corrections and Chair of its Medical Review Board. She had a long career dedicated to community outreach. Over the years, she held many leadership positions in mental health with numerous organizations. She was passionate about protecting the welfare of children and senior citizens.

Dr. Ross was known for her work with children of incarcerated parents using livestream telecommunication systems and organizing a monthly workshop for seniors called "Ethical Elders." She was a very loved and valued member of the Society, serving on the NYSEC Board of Trustees and as Chair of the Social Service Board.
